Steel & Mills essays
Steel & Mills essays The market had also seen an increase in steel service centers, which essentially are distribution centers for the mills. What these centers would do is buy large quantities of steel from the mills, cut the large chunks up and distribute them to customers. This added value to the industry because it allowed the end user the ability to buy a quantity of steel that was more efficient for them instead of having to buy from the mills where they were required to buy larger quantities and waste was high. The only concern to end-users was the efficiency of delivery. Since the advent of Just-in-Time inventory systems, which significantly cut inventory costs to companies, the service centers had to slow inventory as well to cut down on their increasing inventory costs. Since the cut to both inventories was relatively high, but the demand for the steel was increasing it sometimes caused bumps in the road as far as efficiency of delivery. This in turn caused the mills to strike back and th ey started creating price structures that were more favorable to the end-user rather than the service centers. Competition is increasing because of the higher demand for the steel service centers. The increase in demand for steel products has also caused competition to rise. SOS has three service centers and is tops in most of there divisions which is about a 200 mile radius around each service center. SOS seems to have such a good reputation because of their friendly service and their price structure. They remain very competitive in relation to other service centers, and they also are very loyal to customers especially long time customers. ...

The effects of the Black Death in Europe essays
The effects of the Black Death in Europe essays During the 14th century, one of the most deeply stressing moments of the humanity happened in Europe. Nobody was prepared to face this huge disease, the Black Death. Every part of the European society was affected by this problem. The culture, the education, the economy, the religion and the simple life were turned upside down. The first reports that talk about the Black Death came from Italy. This powerful killing machine arrived by boat and was dispersed in other countries in a short period of time. The huge cities were more affected because they received directly the things brought by the infected navies. Also, the rats were carrying the fleas, which were contaminated, and brought the plague in Europe. Rats were carrying the fleas everywhere in cities. Also, during this time, it wasnt really clean in cities (during this time, people had no garbage, the only one that they have was the street) and they werent used to take showers and to be hygienic. Because of that, they were more favourable to contract diseases like the diarrhoea which had for effect to weaken them. Moreover, people were walking with the rats in the street and often they were bitted by them. If people were bitted by the fleas and the rats they became sick really rapidly and the majority of them died before five days. Also, one of the reasons why the Black Death was so devastating is because the Europeans nations werent in good shape. They were in the middle of a war and a lot of countries had already lost thousands of men. Because of this war, the villagers hadnt a lot of food in their plate. People were dying of this famine. Also, the people who werent rich had no other choice than to stay there. Another reason why the disease was spilled really fast is because the rich families, who had the means to move, often brought the plague with them even if they thought they were healthy. One of the reasons why the plague didnt end...

DISCUSSION 6 Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
DISCUSSION 6 - Article Example The sampling strategy that was used for the purpose of study was a random sampling. The study was conducted in one place of DRC, which has typical for the given country conditions. Only one period of distribution was selected (between November and January). Three hundred and sixty two women were randomly selected to take part in the study. Three hundred and twenty eight delivery interviews were conducted. A random sample of 115 women were invited to participate in a 6-month post-delivery interview (Pettifor et al., 2009). Presented sample strategy is representative for the given region. However, it has several limitations that does not permit to spread the obtained results to all population of Congo. The authors admit that the main limitations are the small sample size, estimation for only one object and for only one period. The study that compared the effectiveness for different social groups, groups living in rural and urban areas was not conducted. The damages of nets after 6-month period of utilization that does not permit the further use were not taken into account. Nevertheless, the significant difference of LLINs utilization before and after the distribution permits to conclude that obtained results support the idea that distribution free of charge is the effective measure. The improved sample strategy has to include estimation of the given measure for several objects in different parts of the country. Participants in the places have to be selected several times per year, especially before the periods when mosquitos are the most active. Sample size have to be increased. Random sampling strategy would be the most effective. The possible suitable strategy that permits to estimate the effect for different social or age groups could be a stratified random sampling. Sustainable Tourism in the Galapagos Islands Essay
Sustainable Tourism in the Galapagos Islands - Essay Example I had no idea that sustainable tourism would really amount to such a profound and important topic. So much has been made of global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps, ozone layer pollution and the ozone hole over the Antarctic, the depletion of the rain forests, and many other cases of abuse to our environment because of the emission of harmful greenhouse gases, irresponsible logging, and other acts that we know are wrong but do anyway. Not so much has been said about sustainable tourism. But tourism isnââ¬â¢t an act that is wrong in itself, especially if one takes nothing but pictures and leaves nothing but memories. It never occurred to me that there was such a place as the Galapagos Islands where the very presence of throngs of people is in itself destructive. Acts so innocent as walking off the beaten path, or drinking water and eating fish, if done by enough people at the same time and with great frequency, already compromises the sustainability of the place. This is because off-path grounds may be the site of rare plants or the nesting or feeding place of unique species of rare animals, and mass consumption of drinking water and fish compels added importation of drinking water ââ¬â more chances for the transfer of pollutants ââ¬â and encourages overfishing that may reduce aquatic life to unsustainable levels. For me, the Galapagos in many ways is a miniature version of our planet earth. The species existing in it could not survive anywhere else; so, too, could we not survive outside our planet, at least as far as we know now. Any species lost in the Galapagos is lost forever, such as in our planet; thus, we need to preserve the Islands, just as we need to preserve the planet, enough to sustain life.

Guide Wavelength Measurements Essay Example for Free
Guide Wavelength Measurements Essay The relationship between the wavelength in free space and the guide wavelength. Furthermore, this experiment will be a way in which to gain experience in using different types of laboratory communications equipment. Introduction What is wavelength? Wavelength of a sinusoidal wave is the distance between identical points in the adjacent cycles of a waveform signal. Wavelength is commonly designated by the Greek letter lambda (? )Wavelength is inversely correlated to frequency (figure 1. 1), therefore the higher the frequency of the signal, the shorter the wavelength. vp Is the phase velocity f is the frequency vp Is the phase velocity f is the frequency ?=vpf Figure 1. 1 What is a wave guide? Figure 1. 2 A waveguide is a special form of transmission line consisting of a rectangular (figure 1. 2) or cylindrical metal tube or pipe, through which electromagnetic waves are propagated in microwave and RF communications. It s commonly used in microwave communications, broadcasting, and radar installations. A waveguide must have a certain minimum diameter relative to the wavelength of the signal and therefore are practical only for signals of extremely high frequency. Consequently below such frequencies, waveguides are useless as electrical transmission lines. ââ¬Å"An electromagnetic field can propagate along a waveguide in various ways. Two common modes are known as transverse-magnetic (TM) and transverse-electric (TE). In TM mode, the magnetic lines of flux are perpendicular to the axis of the waveguide. In TE mode, the electric lines of flux are perpendicular to the axis of the waveguide. Either mode can provide low loss and high efficiency as long as the interior of the waveguide is kept clean and dry. â⬠Some disadvantages are: * The high cost, since the material used is special alloy (copper and silver). * It is not possible to pass DC currents along with your RF signal. * The volume and mass particularly are at lower frequencies. Although there is quite a few disadvantages the fact that you can transmit extremely high peak powers and very low loss outweighs it. Furthermore the Silver plating used on the inside walls of the waveguide decreases the resistance loss making the copper and aluminium waveguides even more efficient. Experimental notes The experiment needs to be conducted to obtain the value of the guide wavelength and thereafter calculate the wave dimension and observe whether it matches the initial result that was measured. The initial result measured was the value. Cut-off wavelength for the wave guide mode being propagate ? o = Wavelength in free space g = Guide wavelength, known as delta g The equation to measure ? o is already present as it is given by free-space. Although the cut-off wavelength can be calculated by rearranging the formula in figure 1. 1, the experiment will be used to further confirm this mathematical formula. What we will acquire is a range of guide wavelengths throughout the experiment in order to find the Cut-off wavelength. Where is the cut-off wavelength for the waveguide mode being propagated? The dominant mode is being propagated in the rectangular waveguide (figure 1. 2) which means where (a) is the internal broad dimension of the rectangular waveguide. It is extremely expensive equipment and costs in the region of ? 20,000. This is due to the fact that we are dealing with high frequency signals and not with normal radio waves. Isolator By terminating one port, a circulator becomes an isolator, which contains the property for energy to flow in one direction only. It samples some of the forward wave power and couples it to a calibrated cavity wave meter for measuring the oscillator frequency. Preset attenuator ââ¬Å"Attenuators are essential building blocks when developing test stations for applicationsâ⬠Attenuators are devices used to adjust signal levels which helps to stop the reflected power from reaching the oscillator, control impedance mismatch and to isolate circuit stages. Wave meter Any device for measuring the free-space wavelengths (or frequencies) of microwaves; usually made of a cavity resonator whose dimensions can be varied until resonance with the microwaves is achieved. The determination is often made indirectly, by measuring the frequency of the wave. Calibrated attenuator The calibrator changes the value if it gets too high. Attenuators are manufactured with high-accuracy calibration, and for utmost precision. They available in standard waveguide were each attenuator is calibrated at the frequency specified at the time of order. Standing wave detector Standing wave detector detects radio frequency signals along a transmission line or in a waveguide and changes it into a DC voltage for the reason that the waveguide cannot transmit DC currents along with the RF signal. Tuned SWR amplifier + meter Theà standing wave ratioà meterà measures theà SWR (standing-wave-ratio)à which is the ratio of the amplitude of a partial standing wave at a maximum to the amplitude at a minimum in a transmission line. This is an item ofà radioà equipment used to check the quality of the match between theà antennaà and theà transmission line. Procedure 1. Set up the microwave bench, as indicated. 2. Read the basic instructions for the microwave bench and then obtain oscillations at 8. 5 GHz from the microwave signal source. 3. If it is possible, maximize the deflection on the SWR-meter by using the method outlined in the basic instructions. 4. Measure the frequency, f, using the wave meter. Calculate the free space wavelength, ? o , by using ? o = c/f where c = 2. 997? 1010 cm s-1. 5. Move the standing wave detector (SWD) probe along the slotted line and watch the SWR-meter.

Analysis in narration of the The Tell-Tale Heart :: essays research papers
Analysis in narration of the The Tell-Tale Heart In this paper, it talks about what type of narration of the story à ¡Ã ¥Tell-Tale Heartà ¡Ã ¦ used, and will explain why this type of narration is effective. Obviously, à ¡Ã ¥Tell-Tale Heartà ¡Ã ¦ is a first person narration story. From the wording and the way of presenting, it is clear to see there is one major character and some other minor characters; there are some reasons of why the narration is effective in telling the story. It is very easy to make reader to get involve in the story and easy to picture the actions. The whole story draws reader interested in what happened next of the story. It attracts readerà ¡Ã ¦s attention, understand the mental state of the narrator directly. Author gives confusion to reader between narratorà ¡Ã ¦s action and his speech in order to illustrate a piece of myth to the story. à à à à à à ¡Ã §Tell-Tale Heartà ¡Ã ¨ is a first person narration. à ¡Ã §Ià ¡Ã ¨, à ¡Ã §myà ¡Ã ¨, à ¡Ã §meà ¡Ã ¨ or à ¡Ã §myselfà ¡Ã ¨ appear many times in the story. à ¡Ã §I was never finder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed himà ¡Ã ¨(36), à ¡Ã §He had never wronged meà ¡Ã ¨(36), à ¡Ã §Ã ¡Kwhen my thumb slipped upon the tin fasteningà ¡Kà ¡Ã ¨(37), à ¡Ã §Ã ¡KI felt myself getting paleà ¡Kà ¡Ã ¨(38). It shows that the narrator refers to himself as à ¡Ã §Ià ¡Ã ¨ through the story. The way of presenting in the story helps reader to know it is a first person narration. At the beginning of the story, reader knows the mad man is going to tell his own story. à ¡Ã §Ã ¡Kbut why will you say that I am madà ¡KHow, then am I mad? Hearken! And observe how healthily à ¡V how calmly I can tell you the whole storyà ¡Ã ¨(36). The narrator is going to tell us a story. He wants to explain he is not a mad man. Therefor e, he tells reader his own story and if he telling his own story, then it must be a first person. From above all, it proves that à ¡Ã §Tell-Tale Heartà ¡Ã ¨ is a first person narration story. à à à à à It is effective by using first person narration in à ¡Ã §Tell-Tale Heartà ¡Ã ¨. Readers can throw themselves into the main character and to follow the actions described in the story. Since the first person participants appear in every sentence, thus it makes reader to get involve in the story easily. My First Court Case Viewing-Civil: Small Claims Essay
On the 24th of August 2007, I, with the permission of the prosecution, defence and of course the judge was given the opportunity to quietly observe a civil small claims court case (court 5) at Bromley County Court. This trial had been an ongoing stalemate for a few months; however I luckily was present on the judgement day. Upon arrival the waiting room was busy since there were other more serious court cases going on. The Prosecution, Mr. Austridge, representing himself (accompanied by his wife) was hired by the defence, Ms. Dudley (accompanied by her dad) and a lawyer, Mr. Jones to extend her house however due to a series of poor decisions and errors in workmanship, Dudley terminated the building contract, with her house left incomplete in a state troublesome to herself and her neighbour. Mr. Austridge was prosecuting her on account of his realisation he had been underpaid approximately à £2000. The sequence of events: -Ms. Dudley hired Mr. Austridge to extend her house, consisting of an extension of the kitchen, extension of the porch and a new ensuite bathroom for her bedroom. -Initially Mr Austridge received very inaccurate drawings from Ms Dudley however, he chose to use them anyway and build to her very erroneous specifications. -Mr. Austridge gave Ms Dudley an initial rough estimate of the project which she eventually agreed to after a gradually haggling to a lower value. Furthermore Mr. Austridge didnââ¬â¢t include the duration of the extension due to the fact that the time for this type of extension varies greatly due to the typical British weather and also the number of people there, nevertheless Ms. Dudley hired them and they started on the construction. -After 8 weeks the construction was moving smoothly, with most of the groundwork complete. Dudley showed her satisfaction of the job by occasionally congratulating the builders. A week prior to this Dudley moved to her parentââ¬â¢s house without stating a reason. In fact reason for her leave was that she was allergic to dust but the judge was keen to see whether she brought it to Mr. Austridgeââ¬â¢s attention it was unclear for my stay. -2 weeks later Mr. Austridge went on holiday with his family to Cornwall for a 1 week stay; however it was extended by a week due to the fact there was a ââ¬Å"hurricaneâ⬠making it unsafe to return, Ms. Dudley grudgingly sympathised and didnââ¬â¢t make an issue of it. ââ¬â Mr. Austridge returns and immediately commits himself to the construction. 2 weeks later Ms. Dudley returned and started complaining that the porch was done wrong, and one of the windows was made of the wrong material. The kitchen was an issue because he made the kitchen in 2 parts one being in the extension and she was upset because in order to make it even he raised the ground. She then again asked for a reduction in price for the errors plus for general saving of money and Austridge agreed and put less plug sockets, bulb sockets for the room. ââ¬â Due to heavy rain and the incomplete roof gutter (due to the extension) it overflowed into her neighbourââ¬â¢s garden leaving it a mess. ââ¬â Ms. Dudley terminates the contract, and Austridge requests a meeting with her, she claims that the work took to long and the workmanship was horrendous for the price. ââ¬â Mr. Austridge takes Dudley to court for inadequate payment in order to pay his team. In my viewing Austridge stated that he reduced the payment in a very lenient way and that he was shocked that Dudley was so abrupt in terminating the contract, despite him stating the construction would have only lasted another week and then later contradicting himself saying it would only take a day. Ms. Dudley strangely left her family in hardship by terminating the contract, she apparently told Austridge about the dust allergy but he denied it immediately. Her dad apparently checked the house everyday and said that he was confident that there was nobody occupying it for large periods of time while she was at her parents. Though not mentioning it to Austridge she said moving was extremely inconvenient and her disabled mother made it a greater ordeal for her. Dudley believes she was the one who should have been compensated and helping her neighbour who had also been adversely affected. Mr. Jones gave me the impression that he was there to stall time as most of his points/contradictions were facts and figures which just hindered the case and Austridge did an excellent job of contradiction Mr. Jonesââ¬â¢ which were backed by insufficient evidence meanwhile Mr. Austridge with stacks of paper work to back his points. The judge was forced to recap the events when we went there which she found was futile so she therefore put her foot down and decided to make her decision on the same day. I left before the final decision but I was given the impression it was a very cache 22 situation. Ms. Dudley believing if anything she overpaid and Mr. Austridge thinking he was underpaid. If I was given the opportunity to reach a verdict, from what I deduced, I think that Austridge had a much more powerful, believable case it was clear he was being too much of a nice guy when he reduced the price so willingly and considering Ms. Dudley made the regrettable decision of cancelling the contract, it is still affecting other members of her family and her neighbour, she got the bad end of the stick because of an atrocious decision. Mr. Austridge couldnââ¬â¢t avoid the out of the blue decision and therefore should have been paid for his work.

Leadership: Theory, application, skill development Essay
Over the past one year, the concept and skills that I have been able to learn is that of leadership. Leadership is an important aspect of life because in every situation in life, there is a form of leadership, although minor in some case that is observed. It is often experienced in homes, schools, businesses, organizations, and even governments among other areas in life. Although as an individual I have never been involved in any form of leadership, I believe that leadership plays a very important role in the existences of human beings in the world since through leadership, people are able to know what to do, at what time, how to do it, and what results to achieve in the long run. It was my belief that leadership is meant for the male gender and the females were not suitable for any leadership positions, be it political leadership, at homes, schools or any other place in life. There has been stereotyping in the society that women cannot hold leadership positions except for men (Steinberg, 2008). However, one Sadhana Smiles, who is a chief executive officer of Harcourts Victoria, a real estate group, disapproves this notion that men are the only people who can take top leadership positions. She however, says that a lot of women are rarely considered for roles in leadership since men prefer to deal with their fellow men and are more comfortable in transacting business with other men more than with women. At first, I knew that there is no difference in leadership. For me, anybody who gave commands and issued instructions was a leader. I was wrong. During the year, I read about different types of leadership styles and did my research through observation in several organizations, one being our school as well as my church. I discovered that the frequently applied leadership styles in many organizations across the globe include transformational leadership and the transactional form of leadership (Kippenberger, 2002). Under the transformational leadership I learned that the leaders get an opportunity to give inspiration to the employees, so that the employees can perform beyond their normal duties. I also learned that leaders are people who are capable of performing the functions of showing direction, aligning, influencing, motivating and inspiring of the people they lead. On the other hand manager is simply someone who is capable of planning, budgeting, organizing and allocating resources and can control and resolve problems easily. In addition, leadership can be explained by use of many theories such as the traits theory, behavioural theory, and the contingency or situational theory which include theories such as the path-goal theory (Lussier, & Achua, 2010). Therefore, with the considerations of the above aspects and example on leadership, I realised that leadership is a very important at all levels in an organisation, and within the society. In addition, I realised that in leadership, what can work in one context may not be applicable in another. Culture is also another issue that I got to understand plays a great role in application of the theories of leadership. It is therefore, recommendable that women should be given equal chances in leadership as men without any form of discrimination, something that I really support since women can perform just like men or even better. Innovations in Healthcare Service Delivery
Innovations in Healthcare Service Delivery In medical context, innovation refers to the development of new services, technologies, and ways of working within the healthcare settings (Edwards Grinspun, 2011). Over the last century, the expansion of service sectors has been attributed to the increase in the adoption of innovations and technologies. From the early 1980s, the adoption of innovation in hospitals has resulted in numerous healthcare benefits.Advertising We will write a custom article sample on Innovations in Healthcare Service Delivery specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In most hospitals, innovation in healthcare has reduced costs, enhanced development of new ideas, and provided employees with outstanding career advancement opportunities through continuous training. Equally, through the adoption of innovative technologies most hospitals can now collect and evaluate accurate data (Edwards Grinspun, 2011). In general, innovation in healthcare service delivery is essent ial in improving the value of care services and reducing the ever-increasing cost of treatments. Despite its effectiveness, health organizations experience numerous challenges in adopting and diffusing innovations into their healthcare systems. This paper focuses on trends of innovations, nature, and challenges of innovations in healthcare delivery services. Innovative ideas in healthcare delivery service are achieved through the efforts of creative individuals. Healthcare systems are complicated and integrated necessitating skilled personnel (Edwards Grinspun, 2011). This implies that the minds of individuals working in the healthcare service have to adapt to the complex systems. Psychologists suggest that most healthcare experts have higher chances to be innovative due to continuous rearrangement of their thoughts to meet the new developments. Benefits of innovations in healthcare systems One needs to evaluate how the adoptions of innovations have affected the delivery of service s across our healthcare institutions to understand the benefits of innovation in healthcare (Griffith, 1999). As such, innovations have changed the way treatments and healthcare delivery services are administered in our hospitals. For instance, with the invention of stents the treatment of clogged heart arteries has improved significantly. Unlike in the past when treatment relied on surgery, treatment of clogged heart arteries can now be administered using invasive radiology procedures (Bali, 2006).Advertising Looking for article on health medicine? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Similarly, innovations in health information technology have improved on the efficiency, storage, cost, and transmission of medical data (Griffith, 1999). Because of these, activities relying on health information technologies have been greatly enhanced. In addition, improvements in the health information technologies have enhanced healthc are management. For this reason, hospitals have been able to provide better care services through the adoption of better health care practices. These benefits are evidenced from the gains realized through the adoption of telemedicine. With the adoption of telemedicine, physicians can work as a team. By being connected together via a common network and technology, physiciansââ¬â¢ roles have been demarcated leading to better provision of care services. Several stakeholders are experimenting with innovative methods to improve on the value, cost, and effectiveness of health care services. Among these stakeholders are hospitals, physicians, insurers, and government research institutions. With these initiatives, new delivery systems will be developed. Through these, health care service providers will be encouraged to manage patient care. Similarly, rigorous tests are ongoing to determine how caregivers can lessen undesirable events and errors. The US health care system can significantl y reduce on the cost of medical care far faster than the current efforts put in place to control the medical practice through innovation (Boslaugh McNutt, 2008). In health care service, unlike other industries, innovation has received little attention. More often, innovation in health care has been viewed with suspicion, and in some extreme cases restricted by the providers. Notably, in healthcare the adoption and use of new technologies without appropriate evidence to support on the technologies is viewed as a problem rather than a solution (Faltin, 2012). Similarly, as compared to other sectors, innovation in medicine is not fully supported. In the US, it is estimated that investments in healthcare innovations, over the last two decades, in the areas of heart attack and stroke have returned $2.40 to $3.00 for every dollar invested (Faltin, 2012). As compared to other sectors, the returns in medicine are significantly lower.Advertising We will write a custom article sample on Innovations in Healthcare Service Delivery specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In other sectors, advances in technologies have reduced production costs and improved on the quality of service and goods. On the contrary, advances in healthcare technologies have always been viewed as driving up costs because medical advances increase capabilities. Nature of innovation Innovations in healthcare services take many forms including advances in technology and equipment. However, the greatest opportunities lie in the new types of strategies, organizational structures, facilities and processes and partnerships. Some innovations are easy to adopt due to their ability to yield better quality and lower cost right from the start. For instance, new antibiotics can greatly reduce nursing costs allowing patients to be discharged from the hospital quickly. Similarly, new invasive surgeries have significantly reduced costs and recovery time. On the contrary, other innovations in healthcare service delivery have increased costs while increasing on the quality of service provided. For instance, physicians assert that thrombolytic drugs administered after an attack increases drug costs but lower the rate of hospitalization. Spurring Innovation in healthcare service delivery Stakeholders should develop a culture of innovation, focus on the culture, provide high quality data, provide incentives, and let physicians guide innovation to enhance the use of innovation in the hospitals (Boslaugh McNutt, 2008). Hospitals must advocate for innovation starting from their top positions. To achieve this, hospital leaders must adopt appropriate and effective structures to encourage innovation among their staff members. Similarly, hospitals should recruit additional clinical leaders to achieve this objective. These leaders should be provided with suitable training, for them to manage their fellow physicians and ensure that suitable leadership styles are implemented (Nicholson, 1999). According to medical experts, healthcare service leaders should be paired as much as possible. For instance, an administrative leader could be paired to work with a physician leader.Advertising Looking for article on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Through this, dual leadership model will be realized to supervise longitudinal service lines. In the same way, hospitals can appoint chief innovation officers to supervise clinical and non-clinical tasks. By doing so, a hospital will in a position to prompt and integrate innovation. Although hospitals can spur innovation through innovative leadership, they should also ensure that they develop a favorable environment for innovation to thrive (Nicholson, 1999). It is a fact that most people resist change, so every organization should strive to create an environment that promotes change. Contrary to the past healthcare service cultures where doctors and other physician were allowed to work under minimum supervision, the developed environment should allow physicians to uphold the culture of transparency. Even though most hospitals have reported that it is challenging to achieve a culture of transparency, healthcare stakeholders should always advocate for transparent workforces. Accordin g to Dr. Fickenscher, hospitals should resort to the use of financial incentives to encourage their physicians to offer value care and services (Mlitwa, 2011). If the use of financial incentives is appropriately applied, within the healthcare service delivery will eventually be triggered leading to reduction in costs and improvements in the quality of services. Therefore, physician leaders are urged to use incentives to alter the organizational environment. According to medical experts, innovations are triggered through rewards. Psychologists assert that through incentives people can be encouraged to think, hence come up with solutions to complex challenges in their daily tasks (Mlitwa, 2011). In this essence, hospitals and other medical stakeholders should come up with appropriate compensation methods. For instance, innovative physicians can be rewarded through bonuses and job promotions. Another approach hospitals use to spur innovation is through the provision of high quality dat a (Melnyk Overholt, 2005). After changing the personnel structure, the hospital should supply their personnel with appropriate information on how to change and on the need for change. Failure to provide this information may jeopardize the hospital initiative of stimulating and integrating innovation. To achieve this target, hospitals must provide their physicians with accurate information. Similarly, hospital administrators should be cautious to ensure that the provided data are understandable (Melnyk Overholt, 2005). In most hospitals, the accuracy of their data is a major medical challenge. Therefore, hospitals should adopt suitable measures to ensure the accuracy of their data. Medical experts assert that with inaccurate data, physicians cannot only come up with appropriate clinical decisions, but also deter their innovations. Since the validity of data is a challenge to most healthcare systems, hospitals are encouraged to invest in analytic cultures. Through analytic cultures, physician leaders will advocate for accurate data-driven initiatives (Bali, 2006). Conclusion In conclusion, hospitals should let their practitioners guide innovation in their organizations (Lim, 2011). To achieve this aim, hospital administrators should create a favorable environment, encourage innovative culture, and work with physicians to ensure that innovations are triggered. Similarly, in the quest to enhance innovation, hospitals should ensure that their physician leaders are well trained to identify changes needed to generate value from the resources spent. If innovations are fully adopted in hospitals, patients will be able to interact with their physicians via telemedicine facilities (Edwards Grinspun, 2011). Through this, patients will be able to take photographs detailing their medical conditions and send them to their doctors for evaluation. Improvements in data analysis systems will enhance cost effective health care services. Though the new practices in healthcare h ave proved to be effective in improving care and reducing errors in hospitals, some hospitals and physicians have been slow in adopting them (Lim, 2011). In this regard, the government should step in and be part of the solution. The government has to advocate for innovations in healthcare. By doing so, the government should work with healthcare stakeholders to identify, replicate, and adopt effective innovations across the country (Edwards Grinspun, 2011). As the innovators struggle to come up with appropriate ways of improving healthcare services, consumers should also try to be innovative and identify resources within their reach, which can help them maintain healthier lifestyles (Lazakidou, 2012). This implies that the society should invest more on building sidewalks, sporting facilities and encourage schools to adopt physical exercises for their children. References Bali, R. K. (2006). 9 Things You Need to Know About Getting Paid to Speak
9 Things You Need to Know About Getting Paid to Speak When I first published How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile, I had big dreams of becoming a sought-after keynote speaker. Some part of me thought that just because my book was a best-seller on Amazon, speaking opportunities would be knocking down my doors. I had a magic number in my head for my speaker fee: $2,000 plus travel. It didnââ¬â¢t take long for me to get an inquiry from a national organization, to whom I quoted $2,000 plus travel. They didnââ¬â¢t blink at the price, but they decided my topic was not right for their needs. I was inundated with other speaking offers ââ¬â albeit mostly free ones. I accepted them. I spoke for free for womenââ¬â¢s organizations, educational institutions, and local networking groups. I traveled to California to speak at a Connect ââ¬â Work ââ¬â Thrive conference. I did radio and TV appearances, and was interviewed for several BlogTalkRadio spots. After a couple of years, I started getting more offers to speak for pay. I received $500 for a webinar, $350 for a talk for a local networking group, and $1,500 for three appearances at Project Management Institute meetings in Wisconsin. I was granted 100% of the entrance fees when I spoke at the Yale Club in Chicago, and a percentage of the fees paid when I presented for The National Resume Writersââ¬â¢ Association. Things were looking up. The idea with giving presentations, whether free or paid, is that you get access to potential clients. But I was not getting clients, even when I spoke to audiences theoretically comprised of my target market. Still, I kept speaking, and holding out for paid opportunities. Finally, a breakthrough happened. I was asked to speak at a software company in Madison, and they agreed to pay me close to $2,000 for a 2-hour workshop, plus an additional amount for individual coaching of their staff. Shortly following that win, I was asked for a proposal by a business school on the east coast. I submitted it, and was granted ââ¬â at long last ââ¬â $2,000 plus travel expenses! How I reached this milestone is a complex story. I wasnââ¬â¢t even clear about how I did it until I attended a webinar by Denise Hedges, presented for Career Thought Leaders. Hereââ¬â¢s what I learned, both through my own experiences and through the webinar, about how to make money as a speaker: 1. Become an author. This one is obvious isnââ¬â¢t it? Right or wrong, authors are considered authorities on the topic they write about. If you can become a best-selling author, even better. I have no doubt that having written How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile is responsible for much of the interest in me as a speaker. Writing content for a blog helps too, as does creating a monthly or quarterly newsletter. Build an audience through your writing and you are more likely to attract an audience who wants to see you live. 2. Market yourself confidently as a speaker. I realized early on that if I were going to get paid to speak, I had better have a great head shot. I believe my new head shot, a vast improvement over the home-made one I had used previously, made a difference in the interest level for my services. In addition, once you reach a certain point, create a speaker brochure that includes topics you can speak about, pictures of you speaking, where you have spoken before, enthusiastic testimonials, and a persuasive bio about you as a speaker. It took me years to do this, and once I did I was able to send it to the university who hired me for $2,000. I donââ¬â¢t know what would have happened if I had not had that brochure to promote myself. Finally, show up professionally when you get an inquiry. Over time, I learned what questions to ask to make it clear I know what Iââ¬â¢m doing: What is the organizationââ¬â¢s budget if any? How big is the audience? Who will be in the audience and what are their goals? How long is the presentation? Who will pay for my travel? Who will pay for printing any materials I want to distribute? Do I need a parking pass? Asking these questions demonstrates that you are experienced and in control of the situation. You will command respect. 3. Say yes. Before I got the paid speaking engagements I so desired, I said yes to a lot of unpaid opportunities. Through those events, I became a better speaker and garnered testimonials and photographs to use in my brochure (see #2). I built credibility so that more prestigious organizations would ask me to speak. Notice I said I garnered testimonials. Yes, I asked for them! Testimonials donââ¬â¢t often drop in your lap. But many people will be happy to write them when you ask. Also, you never know who might be in attendance at one of your presentations. I have had attendees at a free talk connect me with future paid opportunities. 4. Choose a punchy title and write an effective program description. In your session title, describe what youââ¬â¢re going to speak about. Donââ¬â¢t be cryptic. Keep the title short ââ¬â and add a subtitle if appropriate. Most important, donââ¬â¢t promise something and then not deliver! You want people to be satisfied that you gave them what they expected (and more). For the description promoting your session, write a paragraph or two about the problem and the solution you will provide, then list 3-5 takeaways of what the audience will get from the presentation. Hereââ¬â¢s Deniseââ¬â¢s well-crafted title: Build Your Business By Speaking:à What Theyââ¬â¢re Not Telling You About How to Get Started And hereââ¬â¢s one of my upcoming session titles: The Human Guinea Pig: How to Put Personality into LinkedIn Profiles 5. Capture their attention Always start your presentations with a story! Personal stories are relatable and create likability and trust. Then tell them your objective and what they can expect to learn during the time youââ¬â¢re together. Set expectations not just for what youââ¬â¢ll be saying, but also for when they will be able to ask questions. These practices will create an attentive audience who is not distracted with wondering why youââ¬â¢re saying what youââ¬â¢re saying or when they will get to ask their questions. 6. Address the concerns of your audience. I often ask the organizer of an event ahead of time to collect questions from people who will be attending my presentation. That way I have an understanding of their needs and can craft my material accordingly. I tailor what Iââ¬â¢m saying to the group to make sure I provide value. I donââ¬â¢t hold back. I provide as much value as I can provide in 45 minutes. It never works to look like youââ¬â¢re trying to sell something. I reserve just the last two minutes for an offer. 7. Give something valuable to your audience. Denise Hedges recommends making an offer to your audience for a complimentary consultation. If you do this right, you can get a 10-20% response from your audience, and about half of them will hire you after the consultation. Iââ¬â¢ll admit that while Iââ¬â¢ve sold a fair number of books after my presentations, I have not been successful in obtaining many clients from my speaking engagements. I have made offers to attendees, but based on the low response Iââ¬â¢ve gotten, those offers have not been attractive enough to create interest. I am going to follow the advice I got from Denise from now on! Hereââ¬â¢s what she recommends for the offer portion of your speech: Make it flow seamlessly Offer a complimentary session ââ¬â talk about what difference your services can make for them Directly address the people in the room who are ready to take action. Tell them if they want certain results, you want to talk to them. 8. Watch your body language. Remember, 93% of your effectiveness is in your NON-VERBAL communication. Make sure you look good, arenââ¬â¢t fidgeting, make eye contact with the audience, and speak in a conversational manner devoid of ââ¬Å"umsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"uhs.â⬠9. Practice! How do you get to Carnegie Hall? You practice. While you can practice in front of actual audiences, itââ¬â¢s much less risky to mess up and tune up by speaking to friends and family, or in front of a video recording device, so you can see what you look like and how you sound. As painful as that can be, itââ¬â¢s more painful to get negative feedback during your real speeches. Do you have more tips for successfully turning speaking engagements into income streams? If a tree falls Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
If a tree falls - Essay Example From his portrayal of McGowan, the producer seems sympathetic of the plight of this radical activist and the ELF as a whole, albeit from a neutral perspective. The producer has used McGowanââ¬â¢s case to represent plight of the ELF and has also examined the origin of radical environmentalism and has highlighted the destruction that was brought by the Earth Liberation Front in the 1990ââ¬â¢s. He has also discussed the issue of terrorism as explained by the government, and in the process he has presented a character, McGowan who does not meet the criteria of being a terrorist in the post 9/11 era. The documentary aims to establish whether crimes directed towards property, and no person is injured constitute terrorism. Through the documentary, we learn that the ELF, which is a conglomeration of radical environmental organizations/groups, opted for civil disobedience and annihilation of environmental abuse symbols when it was unable to accomplish its objectives (Miller & Vandone 67). Therefore the producer of the documentary seeks to establish whether these heinous acts, in the name of radical environmentalism, were terrorist acts. As th e documentary progresses, we feel that Curry is sympathetic about the manner in which radical environmentalists are regarded as terrorists. He gives one example in Oregon when protesters were dispersed by police by tear gas canisters. From this, the audience pities these radical environmentalists who were manhandled by police officers. Therefore, it would seem that the producer used this scenario to depict his sympathy towards radical environmentalists like McGowan. The producer has used McGowan effectively to post the questions that he had in mind. Through McGowan, we sympathize with a former member of the ELF who has been sentenced to life imprisonment due to charges of ââ¬Ëterrorismââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. McGowan had already

The fight for independence from Great Britain for Canada was much Research Paper
The fight for independence from Great Britain for Canada was much different than that of the United States of America - Research Paper Example Meanwhile, Canada and Great Britain, though once tainted with conflicts, now share some cultures and establish trade relationship. Under the colonization of Great Britain, its government system was controlled and the chief state is the British monarch (Hastedt 62). However, after the granting of independence, Canada, as mentioned earlier, was given more power over its legislature and enjoyed the ideals of democracy. Nowadays, the system of government in Canada is still with the essence of democracy but has adopted a parliamentary system--where the legislative and the executive department of the government are fused as far as their power and function are concerned (ââ¬Å"Parliamentary Government,â⬠n.pag.). In United States Great Britain has extended its collection of colonies over the territory of the Americans. During the early centuries at around eighteenth and nineteenth, United States of America was colonized and was in general, imposed with restrictions on economic matters . This was not what the American desired in contrast to Canada; United States took a measure to break the tie of colonization from Great Britain--to go into revolution. According to Thomas and Walker (163), U.S struggled and fought for independence even at war.
