Romeo and Juliet Paper Essay Example for Free
Romeo and Juliet Paper Essay One who is immature may make rash decisions. When someone is immature they have a lack of experience. In literature, the choices a person makes may cause problems for themselves and the people around them. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare portrays the two starà crossed lovers making decisions without thinking of the consequences that often lead to permanent damage. Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet are faced with long lasting feuds, starà crossed secret marriages, life, and overall death. Due to several unexpected deaths, the characters in the story make decisions that cannot be reversed. William Shakespeare proves innocence/immaturity leads one to act rashly causing irreversible problems through the use of characterization and dramatic irony. Through Romeo and Julietââ¬â¢s youthfulness and immaturity they believe they can conquer all without worrying about consequences. Just after Romeo and Juliet met, it was instantly love at first sight. Romeo admiring Juliet from her balcony when he overhears her talking about how she does not care that he was a Montague and that Montague was just a name. Romeo showedà himself to Juliet telling her that he felt the same way. Juliet proceeds to tell Romeo he must leave, he states, ââ¬Å"I have nightââ¬â¢ cloak to hide me from their eyes/ And but thou love me, let them find me here/ My life were better ended by their hate/ Than death prorogued wanting of thy loveâ⬠(II.ii.75à 78). Romeo, as he is à sitting on Julietââ¬â¢s balcony, would rather be caught by the Capulet guards and be killed, then have to leave his true love, Juliet. Romeo acts overly dramatic as he would not mind dying as long as Juliet loves him. Romeo has only just met Juliet earlier that day and is already saying he would rather die than be without her. After Romeo is exiled from Verona, Juliet pretends to kill herself and Romeo actually kills himself, the Friar awakens Juliet. At first, Juliet is confused as she is not exactly sure what is going on. Then Juliet sees Romeoââ¬â¢s body on the floor and says, ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s here? A cup, closed in my trueloveââ¬â¢s hand?/ Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end/ Oh Churl! Drunk all and left no friendly drop/ To help me after? I will kiss thy lips,/ Haply some poison yet doth hang on them/ To make them die with a restorativeâ⬠(V.iii.161à 166). After Juliet finds her true love lying on the floor of her grave dead, she cannot control her emotions. All she wants is to be with Romeo. Not once does Juliet, take a moment to think of the consequences of her actions. She acts quickly, without thinking and she kills herself, acting immaturity. Overall, Shakespeare demonstrates Romeo and Juliet acting immature and overdramatic when facing their starà crossed love. As addition to Romeo acting overdramatic, when he is faced with Julietââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"deathâ⬠,à he acts childish and recklessly, causing irreversible results. After Romeo was banned from Verona because of his fight with Tybalt, Julietââ¬â¢s parents decide that she must marry the county Paris at once. The Friar provides Juliet with a plan to escape her from the marriage with Paris.

The Integrity and Strength of Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberr
The Integrity and Strength of Huckleberry Finnà à à à à à When one is young they must learn from their parents how to behave. A child's parents impose society's unspoken rules in hope that one day their child will inuitivly decerne wrong from right and make decisions based on their own judgment. These moral and ethical decisions will affect one for their entire life. In Mark Twains, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck is faced with the decision of choosing to regard all he has been taught to save a friend, or listen and obey the morals that he has been raised with. In making his decision he is able to look at the situation maturely and grow to understand the moral imbalances society has. Hucks' decisions show his integrity and strength as a person to choose what his heart tells him to do, over his head. à à à à à Huck has been raised in a high-class society where rules and morals are taught and enforced. He lives a very strict and proper life where honesty and adequacy is imposed. Huck being young minded and immature, often goes against these standards set for him, but are still very much a part of his decision-making ability and conscience. When faced to make a decision, Hucks head constantly runs through the morals he was taught. One of the major decisions Huck is faced with is keeping his word to Jim and accepting that Jim is a runaway. The society part of Hucks head automatically looks down upon it. Because Huck is shocked and surprised that Jim is a runaway and he is in his presence, reveals Hucks prejudice attitude that society has imposed on him. Huck is worried about what people will think of him and how society would react if they heard that Huck helped save a runaway slave. The unspoken rules th... ... Ed. Paul Lauter, et al. 2nd ed. Beowulf and The 13th Warrior Essay
Beowulf and the 13th Warrior, both are very good stories, one legibly and the other visually (unless you go to the roots of the 13th Warrior and read Eaters of the Dead). Although it is pretty obvious to anyone who has read Beowulf that the 13th Warrior was based on this great epic, there are still several differences that make for an interesting twist or two. While the two stories are very much alike in several ways, they are also very different. One of the key differences that the reader/viewer notices right off is that the story of Beowulf is being told exclusively aboutà Beowulf and his anticsâ⬠¦ almost in a third person view. The 13th warrior, on the other hand, is being told by aà participant (Antonio Banderas who plays Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan) in the action about the symbolic Beowulf character.à Antonio Banderas or Ahmed Ibn Fadlan, is an Arabian ambassador from Baghdad whose whole purpose in going is toà interact with and learn as much as he can about the ââ¬Å"oddâ⬠and ââ¬Å"unculturedâ⬠ways of the Vikings. Although he starts out pretty upset, almost horrified, about how the Northmen carry on with their barbaric customs and almost complete lack of hygiene of almost any sort. The reason that Antonio Banderasââ¬â¢s character is even part of the story is that the Vikingsââ¬â¢ leader, Buliwyf, needs a 13th ma n that cannot be a northman to be included in his posse of adventurers. The goal of the adventurers is to report to an aging ââ¬Å"King Hrothgarâ⬠and help him to protect his people from a tribe of savages (you almost think that they as well are ââ¬Å"supernaturalâ⬠because there are never any of their dead left after battle and they are continually riding around inà bear skins that give them a positively frightening appearance in the mist andà at night) that are causing anà incredible amount of terror (Iââ¬â¢d be pretty scared too if I walked into a friendââ¬â¢s cabin and him and his family were cut up into pieces) and completely destroying the population; Grendel is the embodiment of all of the savages, while his only having himself, he so terribly lessened the population and established such a reputation, that he successfully made king Hrothgar move out of his prized mead hall. While there are several similarities in the stories, one very important detail to notice is the parallel between Mr. Buliwyf and Beowulf (both of them are leaders of soldiers and they both rush to the aid of a troubled king whose kingdom is in danger). On top of, both of these leaders of men make it their mission to go and kill the ââ¬Å"motherâ⬠(ââ¬Å"motherâ⬠of the savages and Grendelââ¬â¢s mother). In Beowulf, the hero actually fought and killed Grendel (ââ¬Å"eaters of the deadâ⬠leader and savages combined) first and then when his mother (ââ¬Å"motherâ⬠of the ââ¬Å"eaters of the deadâ⬠) came and took away his body to her home in the lake, Beowulf followed and then killed her as wellâ⬠¦ but I suppose the order doesnââ¬â¢t really matter. Another issue to notice is the parallel in ââ¬Å"supernaturalâ⬠happenings and traits in the two stories. In Beowulf, he had supernatural strength, there was no one and nothing in the world that was strong than he was (he tore Grendel apartâ⬠¦ literally, and Grendel was a demon which I imagine is no easy feat). The parallel to that in The 13th Warrior was how even after Buliwyf was poisoned just before he cut off the ââ¬Å"motherââ¬â¢sâ⬠head, he still was able to fight through the poisonous haze and muster the strength (even though everyone thought he was pretty muchà dead in the town hall) when the time came, and fight off the vengeance being sought by the ââ¬Å"eaters of the deadâ⬠for killing their ââ¬Å"mother.â⬠After he dispatched with a couple of savages, he swings his sword at the leader and doesnââ¬â¢t just hit him and knock him off (heââ¬â¢s wearing chest armor so the sword doesnââ¬â¢t cut him in half), he has enough strength not only to try and knock the leader off his horse, but makes him fly off about 10 feet in the opposite direction that he was originally trying to go to get to Buliwyf. The comparison of the way that the fighting men in each of the stories look at fighting is also interesting. In both stories, pride and boasting and ââ¬Å"manlinessâ⬠plays a very important role in the way things are done. Whetherà you fight or not seems to directly impact whether you are a ââ¬Å"manâ⬠or not. The warrior code is an imperative part of any good epic, or war story in generalâ⬠¦ there has to be a ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠guy that, no matter how bad what he does is, follows some sort of honor code, that is an integral part of a good story. Another very obvious difference is that in the 13th Warrior, Mr. Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan is not the main character ofà the story, whereas in Beowulf, Beowulf is obviously the one the story is about. As the viewer watches the 13th Warrior, they will notice that Antonio Banderas serves as the focal point/narrator of the film, even though the story isà not about him. This fact becomes painfully obvious towards the end of the movie, just before the climactic battle, where the main character (the one that is symbolic of Beowulf), Buliwyf, indirectly asks Antonio to write down the story (Mr. Banderas actually seems to offer to copy it down so that their story is not forgotten) and Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan says it will be done (you get the feeling itââ¬â¢s almost a ââ¬Å"get wellâ⬠gift because Buliwyf is going to die from poison). So, despite not being the main character, he plays a very important roleâ⬠¦ not only in the copying down of the story but also because he is the reason they were able to put down the savages. One very obvious difference (not sure what the directors were thinking) was that there was sort of aà miniature love story sort of randomly thrown into The 13th Warrior. There really seems to be no point to it, it really has nothing to do at all with the main point of the movieâ⬠¦ possibly it was a weak attempt to attract a femaleà crowd (despite the gore) by claiming that it was, in part, a love story. Overall, it causes one to get distractedà from the pointâ⬠¦ and it just creates more questions then it answers. While one story is obviously a remake of the other, they still have their own, very acute, differences. And while the 13th Warrior doesnââ¬â¢t nearly come close to being as good of a story as it could have, and there are still several parallels with Beowulf that mad it enjoyable (obviously aside from the action which would make it enjoyable anyway).

Utilizing Assessment to Improve Student Life The process of pre-University admission assessment can serve an important role in enhancing student motivation and achievement. Professors can help enhance student performance by sharing clearly defined learning goals. Through student involvement in the assessment process, students learn to take responsibility for their own learning. This feeling of accountability and control may increase the studentsââ¬â¢ intrinsic motivation to learn and can heighten success. Also, Professors have the opportunity to help students succeed through the implementation and communication of quality assessments. Black and William (1998) define assessment broadly to include all activities that teachers and studentsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Faculty and administrators, working to meet multiple and at times competing demands, too rarely focus on either improving instruction or demonstrating gains in student learning. They enroll in courses that do not require substantial reading or writing assignments ; they interact with their professors outside of classrooms rarely, if ever; and they define and understand their college experiences as being focused more on social than on academic development. Moreover, we find that learning in higher education is characterized by persistent and/or growing inequality. There are significant differences in critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing skills when comparing groups of students from different family backgrounds and racial/ethnic groups. More important, not only do students enter college with unequal demonstrated abilities, but those inequalities tend to persist or, in the case of African-American students relative to white students, increase while they are enrolled in higher education. In addition to involving students in assessment, the University boost student success by creating authentic, quality assessments. Professors and students can only gain accurate knowledge of achievement through quality assessments. Valid and reliable assessments will clearly show the professor and student what knowledge and skills have been learned. From these results further learning can be initiated, whether that means re-teaching or setting newShow MoreRelatedThe Cohort Of Student Students1421 Words à |à 6 Pagesdecades.
